It’s where people relax after a busy day and where families spend quality time together. Every Icelandic town, no matter how small, has its own pool. Hof Cultural and Conference CenterĪfter talking to a few locals, you will realize how much Icelanders love their swimming pools. Students were told not to look behind while they walk up because otherwise they would fail their exams. This path going up is now called the Road to Education. Over time, a new tradition emerged to welcome new students to the College, which is to walk the same path, but instead of walking down, walk up. Some students found this improper and call this path the Road to Destruction.

Students in the Akureyri Junior College used to walk down this path to go to the dance hall for a night out.

It’s a small and simple path leading down the hill, but with a fun history behind it. If you’re walking from the Akureyri Church to the Botanical Gardens, you will pass by a small attraction called the Road to Destruction. (It was our first time seeing Himalayan daisies) If you’re in Akureyri in the summer months, this is a place that you definitely don’t want to miss. You will find all kinds of species that are native to Iceland, and also you will see different species from around the world. I was surprised by the extensive collection of plants here. There are paths designed to lead you around the garden and give you a beautiful scenery along the way. The garden itself is very well maintained and managed, with different sections dedicated to different types of plants. It was a great walk to the garden from downtown. We arrived at Akureyri in July and locals told us that it’s a great time to visit the botanical garden as flowers are blooming.
